The spitfire is one of the very few man-made sculptures I have undertaken, because I felt a connection to the character of it. After I agreed to take it on I had the idea of forming only one colour of the camouflage paint into the skin, stretched over the ribs and struts of the fuselage. There was a great deal of very fiddly making here, because I wanted to be true to the original. The decaying remains of the dream which won the Battle of Britain.
